A bill that would make it easier for Secretary of State Mike Coffman to solve problems with the state’s troubled voting machines and get them recertified took another step toward becoming law today when a Senate committee passed it unanimously.
House Bill 1155 would not lower the standards for voting machine certification, but it would allow county elections officials to participate in the testing so that their expertise could be taken into consideration when deciding whether the machines are accurate and secure.
The Senate’s State, Veterans and Military Affairs committee left the bill largely unchanged, though it did insert a clause specifying that the recertified machines could only be used in the 2008 and 2009 elections before they would have to be tested again.
“This is a temporary fix,” said Sen. Sue Windels, D-Arvada.
